This song was inspired by "Nightfall", a science fiction short story by Isaac Asimov, first published in 1941, about the coming of darkness to the people of a planet ordinarily illuminated at all times on all sides.
John W. Campbell, editor fo "Astounding Science Fiction magazine", asked Asimov to write this story after discussing with him a quotation from Ralph Waldo Emerson:
"If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore, and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God!"
