hungry waves swallow our cries
This rusty hull barely afloat
the air is filled with wailing and moans

My friend Biran and I rode through the desert
Twenty-eight of us in a beat up pickup truck
we walked through the dunes for twenty-two hours,
Biran collapsed... and died in my arms
When I finally got to Libya they locked me up in some prison
where I waited for a ship and days turned to weeks
And there came a time when I wondered how long I could carry on
And so many times I thought I couldn't bear any more
And day after day I just told myself, don't give up, not now
And every time I told myself, hold fast, it's just matter of time

Now here on this ship the engine is stalling
a tiny light flickers far away on the dark horizon
and In a desperate attempt to signal for help
someone sets a blanket ablaze
suddenly the fire is spreading all around
I dive into the darkness and gasp in salty water
And I see the fire receding, far away on the surface
Where mothers are still screaming and children crying
while the men try in vain to put out the fire
